Elementary and Middle School Groups
Due to high demand, the Office of Admissions has shifted our focus to high school and community college tours. We no longer offer tours for elementary and middle school groups and all slots for our elementary/middle school Education Day events have been filled for the academic year.

🔹 Tour Highlights
Your visit will last about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your group size, and will cover all the must-see spots! Our campus tour experience is a walking tour experience and will include a thorough view of our campus facilities.

🔹 Tour Guidelines
To make sure everyone has the best experience, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Groups need 1 chaperone per 10 students, with a max of 75 students per tour.
  • Tours happen rain or shine, and will only be postponed for severe weather or extreme heat.
  • To ensure an authentic academic environment, tours won’t include sitting in on classes, but we promise there’s plenty else to see and enjoy!

🔹 Special Requests
While we’d love to show off our school spirit with things like step shows, mascot meet-and-greets, and meetings with faculty or staff, these aren’t guaranteed during tours. But don’t worry, the tour itself will be full of amazing highlights!

🔹 Booking Your Tour
All tours must be booked in advance. You’ll receive a confirmation email with all the info you need once your tour is set! Unfortunately, we can’t accommodate same-day requests or self-guided tours.
When you’re ready to book, make sure your group is available—unavailable dates will be grayed out.

🔹 Dining Options
Want to grab a bite during your visit? Dining options are available! Once your tour is confirmed, you'll receive information to coordinate meals directly with our catering services. Just a heads up—meals aren’t included in the tour time, so be sure to coordinate with our catering team for availability.

Employment for F1 Students

Employment for F1 Students

Speak to
Carla Tyree
Mon - Fri: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
J. Millard Tawes Center, 1st Floor

An F-1 student may be authorized up to a total of 12 months of full-time practical training at each educational level (e.g., undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate). If the student chooses to engage in pre-completion OPT, he or she may not work more than 20 hours per week while school is in session, but may work full-time during his or her annual vacation and other times when the school is not in session. If a student engages in pre-completion OPT, the student’s eligible period of post-completion OPT will be reduced by 1 month for every 2 months of part-time pre-completion OPT that is worked when he or she graduates. Students who graduate with a qualified Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) degree, and are currently in an approved post-completion OPT period based on a designated STEM degree may apply for a 17-month STEM extension of their post-completion OPT.

Once you have determined which F-1/OPT is the best pathway for you and you are ready to apply, visit the office of International Student Services to obtain an application packet and process instructions.

Request for Practical Training

Practical Training is a benefit available to F-1 students who have been lawfully enrolled in a Department of Homeland Security approved academic institution like Coppin State University. Students who have been granted Practical Training may accept employment in the US to work in their fields of study.

OPT Form

Student may be authorized to work in the United States for up to 12 months in paid professional employment that is directly related to their degree program, except STEM majors who are allotted an additional 17 month extension if applied for. It is not necessary to have a job to apply for OPT and while on OPT students may change jobs without penalty or without having to reapply for work authorization.

OPT Extension

To be eligible for an OPT extension, a student must have received a degree (bachelor’s or master’s) in the STEM fields. These degrees include Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. At Coppin State University, you are eligible for the extension if you have received a degree in one of the above listed fields.

CPT Form

Students may be authorized for CPT, or Curricular Practical Training, to engage in for credit training programs which are an integral, but not necessarily required, part of an established curriculum.

Economic Necessity

To be eligible for off-campus employment due to economic hardship the student must:

  • Have been in F-1 status for one full academic year, be in good academic and legal standing, and carry a full course of study.
  • Demonstrate that there has occurred an unforeseen severe economic hardship beyond his or her control and that on-campus employment opportunities are not available or insufficient.
  • Establish fact that other employment options are unavailable or insufficient.

Important aspects of economic hardship employment:

  • Economic hardship refers to financial problems caused by unforeseen circumstances beyond the student’s control. The financial problems may, for example, result from an unexpected loss of a graduate assistantship, the death of a financial sponsor, or fluctuations in the home country currency or exchange rate. If the financial situation is too severe, it may not be possible to solve the problem with part-time employment and the student may be denied the Employment Authorization Document (EAD). The Designated School Official (DSO) and the student may need to look at other solutions.
  • Employment is limited to 20 hours per week while school is in session and full-time during vacations or holidays.
  • The application requires a recommendation by the DSO in SEVIS. If approved by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the USCIS will issue the student an EAD card.
  • USCIS approval is granted in one-year intervals.
  • Authorization ends upon expiration of the EAD card, the completion date of the program or school transfer.

To apply, submit the following to the International Student Services office:

  • Completed USCIS Form I-765. In item #16 on the form, write in the following code: (c) (3) (iii)
  • A check or money order payable to “Department of Homeland Security” (see website for current fee information.)
  • Copy of I-94 number
  • Copy of Passport
  • Current I-20
  • Two passport photos
  • Supporting materials documenting the unforeseen nature of the economic hardship and the unavailability of other employment on campus, including a letter that describes your circumstances.
  • Copy of old EAD card (if applicable)

The DSO will then make a recommendation for employment in SEVIS by updating the student’s record. The DSO will give you the packet containing copies of the documents to be mailed to the USCIS Service Center.

You may not begin work until USCIS has approved your petition and you have received your EAD (Employment Authorization Document) card. IMPORTANT: EAD cards cannot be delivered to a P.O. Box.

It is currently taking 3 months or more to process Economic Hardship Authorizations.

Understanding Your I-20 and Visa

Understanding Your I-20 and Visa

Speak to
Carla Tyree
Mon - Fri: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
J. Millard Tawes Center, 1st Floor

What is an I-20?

The I-20 is a multi-purpose document issued by a government-approved, U.S. educational institution certifying that you have been admitted to a full-time program of study, and have also demonstrated sufficient financial resources to stay in the U.S. The I-20 is officially titled the "Certificate of Eligibility" because with it, you are "eligible" to apply for an F-1 student visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad. Your spouse or children will also each need their own I-20 to obtain F-2 dependent status, if desired.

Getting the I-20 from a U.S. school is not enough to become a legal F-1 student; you must also be allowed entry to the U.S. as an F-1, or be approved for a change of status from another type of nonimmigrant visa.

How the I-20 is created

After a school completes their admissions process, the admitted students' names and other biographic information are entered into a U.S. government database called SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System). The SEVIS database processes the information and produces a "PDF" file of the I-20 that is sent back to the school via the internet. The school official (called the Designated School Official or DSO) prints and signs the I-20 and then delivers it to the student. If a student needs to update or change information on the I-20, the DSO makes these requests through SEVIS and the document can be easily reproduced.

How the I-20 is used by the student outside the U.S.

After receiving an I-20 from their school, an international student must make an appointment to apply for the F-1 visa at the local U.S. embassy or consulate in their country. The visa is the document needed to be allowed entry into the U.S. The student must present both the F-1 visa and the I-20 to a U.S. Immigration inspector upon arrival at the port-of-entry.

How the I-20 is used by a student inside the U.S.

Once you have arrived in the U.S. and passed through the border inspections process, it is used for identification purposes and proof of your legal status. If you get a job on or off-campus, you will be required to show the I-20 to your employer during the hiring process. Off-campus employment information will be printed on page 2 of your I-20.

Traveling with the I-20

If you will be traveling abroad and then returning to the U.S. to resume your studies, you must take your I-20 with you. The I-20 is required to reapply for a visa if you need one and for re-entering the U.S. Before your departure from the U.S., make sure that you have an unexpired travel endorsement from an Advisor at Coppin State University on page 2 of your I-20. This signature is valid for one year for multiple visits outside the U.S. In most cases, a travel endorsement can be done easily; however, be sure to plan ahead and get your travel endorsement several weeks before you depart the U.S. to avoid the holiday rush.

Page 2 of the I-20 = F-1 Regulations

Immigration regulations governing the F-1 status are listed on page 2 of the I-20. It is important that F-1 students read this page to understand the rules that apply to their stay in the U.S.

Your I-20 Completion Date

A "completion date" was entered onto your I-20 based on your particular major and degree level. This is an estimate of time the University feels it may take you to fulfill all degree requirements. However, if you are not able to finish your program on that date, you must request an extension from the International Student Services Advisor office at least one month before the completion date expires.

According to U.S. immigration regulations, the "completion date" is defined as the day you complete your final degree requirements. Your actual completion date may not necessarily be the day of your graduation ceremony or the date on your I-20 (In fact, many students actually finish their degree requirements before the completion date on their I-20).

Undergraduate Students:

Your completion date is considered to be the last day of final exams of the semester your degree requirements are fulfilled.

Graduate Students:

Your completion date is the day on which all degree requirements are fulfilled, such as filing the thesis or dissertation in the Graduate Division. If you do not have a research component to your degree program (such as in the MBA program or other professional schools), your completion date would be the last day of final exams of the semester your degree requirements are fulfilled.

The 60-day Grace Period

When you complete your study program, you are allowed a 60-day grace period to depart the U.S., request a school transfer, or change your status. Note: Students who are interested in working in the U.S. following their program completion must apply for Optional Practical Training work authorization at least 90 days before the actual program completion date.

Does Everyone Need an I-20?

Some international students do not need I-20s. If you are maintaining another nonimmigrant status in the U.S., you do not need an 1-20 and may be able to attend school full- or part-time. Dependent children in E, H, I, J, L, M, N, 0, P, R, or S status need to change status after their 21st birthday.

Understanding Your US Entry Visa

To enter the U.S., all nonimmigrant international visitors (except Canadians) are required to have the proper visa stamp placed in their passports. “Nonimmigrant” means a person has no intention of staying in the U.S. permanently. Visas are obtained at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad. Visas cannot be obtained within the U.S., since it is an "entry" document only.

People come to the U.S. for many different reasons, and the type of visa you request should match the purpose for your visit. Visa types are classified using an alpha-numeric system. For example, a visitor coming to study in the U.S. may be given an “F-1” or “J-1” student visa classification. A person coming to the U.S. for travel may be given a “B-2” visa, otherwise known as a tourist visa. The sample here shows what a tourist visa looks like:

Sample United States visa document with explanatory captions for each section of the visa

Why do I need a visa?

Your visa allows you to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (airport, for example) and present yourself to a U.S. Immigration Inspector. The Inspector will ask you some questions about your intentions for coming to the U.S. and check to make sure you have the appropriate visa. Once admitted, you will be given another document, called the I-94 Arrival/Departure Record, which indicates which nonimmigrant status you are allowed to use and the amount of time you are allowed to stay.

Visa expiration and Your Length of Stay in the U.S.

Although a visa has an expiration date, it does not determine how long you can remain in the U.S. (a visa is an ENTRY document only). Once you are in the U.S., there are other factors that determine your length of stay. International visitors coming to the U.S. as F-1 or J-1 students are generally allowed to remain for the length of their academic programs.

How does Coppin define a current or former military service member?

A current service member is part of any of the following six official branches of the U.S. Armed Forces: Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Space Force and Coast Guard.

A former military service member is a veteran of any of the six branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, who served on active duty for more than 180 days and was discharged honorably or due to a service connected disability.

Do I need to submit additional documentation with my Coppin Admissions application?

We strongly urge all active duty service members to consult with their military education services officer (ESO) prior to embarking on your college career. Your ESO is most helpful in identifying financial resources and career paths that best align your career goals and prior military training .
