Meet West Muhammad: Coppin State University’s Youngest Freshman

14-year-old West Muhammad at Fall 2024 Convocation

BALTIMORE – This fall, Coppin State University welcomed its largest freshman cohort since 2011. Among them was West Muhammad, the youngest first-year student in the university’s history. At 14 years old, this Baltimore native is already making his mark on campus as a cybersecurity engineering major.

West’s academic journey is nothing short of extraordinary. West developed a love for computer safety and problem-solving—skills at an early age. Now he can further develop his skills at Coppin State. "Coppin was always my first choice," West shared. "The university offers the perfect environment for me to grow and explore my interests."

West’s talents do not end in the classroom. In addition to pursuing his studies, he contributes as a writer for The Final Call, where he addresses issues impacting the community. His voice reflects both his intellectual curiosity and deep commitment to service.

"We are honored to have West join the Coppin family," said Dr. Anthony L. Jenkins, President of Coppin State University. "West had his choice of many institutions, he and his mother knew our nurturing environment and quality academics would be the perfect fit. West is a shining example of what is possible with determination, curiosity, and a university design to meet the need of a multigenerational student population."

West’s story is more than a tale of academic acceleration—it is an inspiring example of challenging expectations, setting ambitious goals, and carving out a unique path. As he embarks on this exciting journey, Coppin State is proud to support his success and personal growth.
