Biography

Dr. John Wesley Magness – Academic Biography

Dr. John Wesley Magness is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Sport Management at Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland. With over 40 years of experience in coaching, mentoring, and sports leadership, he is dedicated to preparing students for successful careers in sport management, health and wellness coaching, and athletic performance.

Dr. Magness earned his PhD in Sports Leadership & Administration from Concordia University of Chicago and holds advanced degrees in Exercise Science and Health and Wellness Coaching. As a Navy veteran, he brings a disciplined, leadership-focused approach to academic instruction and athletic training, emphasizing the practical application of theory across sports, fitness, and health sciences.

In addition to his teaching roles, Dr. Magness is a certified professional with credentials from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) – where he is certified as a Youth Exercise Specialist (YES) and Senior Fitness Specialist (SFS) – the American Council on Exercise (ACE), were he is recognized as a health coach and personal trainer and the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), where he is recognized as a Strength & Conditioning Coach. He is also a candidate for the National Board Certification in Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC).

His research interests include holistic student-athlete development, sports coaching, strength and conditioning, sports organizational development and operations, senior physical activity, sports, and health and wellness topics.

Through his teaching, research, and mentorship, Dr. Magness inspires the next generation of sports and health professionals, fostering sustainable wellness and leadership both on and off the field.
